In a single-stage regulator when the cylinder valve is opened the gas flows, at cylinder pressure, into the high-pressure chamber of the regulator. Turning the pressure adjustment screw controls the level of pressure in the outlet from the regulator.

As the cylinder pressure falls the outlet pressure rises, the operative will need to periodically check and adjust the pressure adjustment screw.

If an application/process requires constant, accurate pressure a multi-stage regulator should be used.
